What To Know

The New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a devastating parasitic insect whose larvae (maggots) burrow into the open wounds and body cavities of living, warm-blooded animals—and rarely, humans. Unlike common blowflies, they feed exclusively on healthy living flesh, causing painful, foul-smelling wounds that can be fatal if untreated.
