The Schumacher Grant
The Beginning
February 2024 was a rough patch for SVC, the Las Cruces Police Department, and the Las Cruces community as a whole following the tragic murder of LCPD Officer Jonah Hernandez just a short distance from the clinic. In the aftermath, SVC has been a proud participant in the “We Have Your 6” campaign to support all law-enforcement and first responders, but we’ve also had a “pet project” of our very own
The Grant
The situation regarding homelessness, crime, and illegal drug use in Las Cruces is significant and complex. There are no easy answers for helping humans, thankfully…the animals are easy to help. What began as a very small idea of vaccinating dogs and cats at Camp Hope exploded thanks to the generosity of our clients, Las Cruces, and even folks from afar. In a few short weeks we moved from simply giving shots to providing dog/cat aid bags and raising money for both spay/neuter efforts and general veterinary care. Thanks to “The Schumacher Grant” and monies donated through SNAP [Spay & Neuter Action Program] and ARF [Animal Relief Fund via Dona Ana County] we’ve been able to play a small part in helping these animals. We’ve been fortunate enough to now expand and help clients through La Casa and La Clinica de Familia as well. It’s been quite rewarding in just a short period of time.

This project continues to evolve and we are working to establish annual fundraising efforts to that it might become a permanent fixture. There are specific guidelines regarding distribution of funds, please feel free to ask if you have any questions. Donations to SNAP or ARF are always appreciated—please designate that contributions go specifically to The Schumacher Grant—and are tax-deductible. Donations should be made directly to SNAP or ARF, although we are glad to help assist/introduce you if needed.
Thanks for being awesome!
